The Topeka Zoological Park, a department of the City of Topeka, opened in 1933 and has been a regional attraction for many years. Historically, zoo expansions and projects were funded through government obligation bonds, the zoo improvement fund, general improvement funds and partnerships with FOTZ and private donors.
The zoo currently has 32 people on staff working in seven areas or divisions; administration, animal management, animal health, education, visitor services, concessions and facilities. The zoo is licensed through USDA and accredited by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA).
